External Hardstandings by Concast

External concrete has to deal with heavy vehicles, weather and standing water. We construct service yards, dock aprons, loading areas and hardstandings for industrial estates, distribution sites, depots and farms across Lancashire and the North West.

Each hardstanding is set out to the falls on the drawings so that water runs to the drainage channels and gullies, then reinforced, poured in bays and given a brushed or textured finish. Joints are sawn or formed to control cracking, and edges are formed against kerbs, channels and building lines.

What the work includes

Service yards

Large external slabs for industrial units and distribution sites.

HGV aprons

Reinforced aprons in front of loading doors and dock levellers.

Falls and drainage

Slabs set to falls into channels and gullies so that water clears.

Textured finishes

Brushed and textured surfaces for grip in wet weather.

Jointing

Sawn and formed joints to control cracking across large areas.

Farm yards

Concrete yards and aprons for agricultural buildings.

Frequently asked questions

What finish do you give external slabs?

External hardstandings are normally given a brushed or textured finish so that they keep their grip in the wet. The finish is agreed with you before the pour.

Can a yard be built to carry HGV traffic?

Yes. The slab thickness and reinforcement are set by the engineer for the loads, and we build to that design with the joints and drainage to suit.

Do you form the falls to the drainage?

Yes. The slab is set out to the levels on the drawings so that surface water runs to the channels and gullies.

Can you work around a site that is still operating?

In most cases, yes. Large yards are poured in bays, so the work can be phased to keep access open.
